Especially with one in particular...

Victoria truly has a good life.
Simple, yet engaging.
Until her life irrevocably changes.

My eyes continue scanning the myriad of people that showed up, whether it was for the show or not, everyone seems pumped for tonight. Everyone is basically feeding off of each other's energy, causing the entire place to surge with adrenaline and sweat.
At the corner of my eye, I spy the bartender come with my drink. Damn, that was pretty fast. I didn't think I'd get it so quickly. If it's ass-to-pelvis everywhere else, then it's elbow-to-elbow here at the bar counter.
"Thanks."
I'm pretty sure he didn't hear me with the crowd and all, but I could make out his grin and perfectly aligned white teeth in the very dim lighting. I could've sworn I saw him wink at me before tending to another person waving a twenty in his face.
I take a sip and another glance, expectantly at the closed curtains. Knowing that Gabe and the rest of the guys are behind them. Checking everything that needs to be checked before the curtains open, signaling their time to start playing on stage.
Already, I start to hear some people chant their band name, urging them to hurry up and come out since it's real close to show time. As I am about to take another drink, somebody bumps into my shoulder, causing me to spill the beverage all over my leg.
Son of a bitch.
I felt somewhat lucky that I'm wearing black skinny jeans, so it won't be that noticeable. However, I'm not lucky enough. I'll still be able to feel the wetness of it and its sticky residue, which is just peachy.
I then feel a hand on my shoulder and hear someone speak into my ear, so that I'm able to hear them over the crowd. "I am so sorry, let me get you another drink." I turn and watch the guy dash off into the sea of gyrating fiends before I get the chance to say anything.
Well so much for that drink, I thought.
Waiting for the performance to begin, I start to get excited again. The downside of my new stain and the soon-to-be sticky leg leave the forefront of my mind as the drummer behind the curtain does a quick sound check on his set. Once he's done, riffs from a guitar surge throughout the speakers, and then I hear another session of chords play out from another guitar. Now the band is playing all together and checking their sound.
I turn back and face the bar to ask the bartender for a dish towel or some napkins to dry myself a bit. My lips part slightly and my eyelids blink in recognition. The bartender from before is gone, in his place is the same guy who offered to get me another drink.
Before I get the chance to call him out, the buzz from the crowd immediately shoots up, causing a frenzy. The reason being is that the heavy velvet curtains opened and revealed four figures up on the sad excuse of a stage. Turns out that those women were on point. All I see is them.
What was I saying about the stage again?
The atmosphere changed almost instantly. The bassist with colored eyes looks like he belongs on the beach somewhere catching a few waves, Gabe is the guitarist so I won't go into too much detail about him, but even I have to admit he looks bad-ass up there. The singer isn't up there yet so the next guy that got my attention was the drummer. His banging skills were on point, extremely talented that guy is, although I'm pretty sure that wasn't what that girl behind me was gushing about.
I suddenly hear one girl shriek so loud above the rest of the crowd, "OH MY GOD, THERE HE IS!" Almost immediately, girls begin to scream high-pitch. That group behind me began jumping up and down and trying to push forward to get a closer look. I finally lift my gaze to the guy that just sauntered onto the stage with a guitar draped along his back and a microphone in hand.
His camera-ready smile turns into a seductive grin, "Evening." Everything went on mute for me, but in the back of my mind, I know the crowd's cheer just went way louder after he greeted them. I fixated on at those familiar pearly whites for a while until some other facial feature caught my attention. He has two dimples, one on each cheek. My blazing stare draws down, languidly, past his beautifully structured jaw, to his virile, expansive chest. The way his plain black t-shirt just stuck to his physique in all the right places... The dark material makes his vibrant green eyes stand out nicely.
The longer I look the more hot I feel. Licks of heat run up my back and spread into my cheeks. I'm flushed.
I was a goner. Sucker punched in a way that left me breathless as he continued to talk to the crowd and introduce the band members. Usually people get annoyed when a band doesn't play right away, but he seemed to be relaxed up there, like having a normal conversation and taking his sweet time.
When he began to sing the first song of the night, his voice pulled me in to a vortex and held me captive. There was no way I could've fallen so quickly, so unexpectedly. His voice had me in awe, the way he sang didn't so much as take away from the other band members' playing, but in a way complimented them all. So that when they all came together, it was like having a tidal wave wash over and take you to wherever you dared to desire.
This was all too surreal.
During their breaks in-between songs, he mostly sweet-talked the ladies and gave them seductive looks as if saying 'Meet me after the show' or 'I want you here and now'. I wouldn't be surprised if every single woman here would do anything, and I mean anything, to have a night or two with him, or any of the others. Except for Gabe because he's butt ugly.
I'm really starting to wonder why they aren't even signed yet. People at record labels and agencies would have to be blind not to be able to see stardom in their image and sound. These guys could really hit it big and be set for life if they really wanted it.
One of their songs they played was a ballad and a part of the song was acoustic. They had the spotlight on just the singer, and the other guys ceased to play. He was on a stool and for the first time that night, brought around his guitar and strung a few cords.
That moment was not lost on him, I'm sure.
I could tell the difference from when he's having fun and teasing the crowd with gestures and stuff. This time, it was just him and his guitar. His eyelids were closed shut, and he sang from the heart. When that serene moment was over, the crowd practically roared their enjoyment and excitement. His gaze flickered all around, as if searching the crowd. He glanced toward the bar and where I was sitting, but that quickly ended and moved on to other parts of the crowd his eyes haven't covered yet. That was supposed to be the last song of the night, but it was obvious that everybody wanted an encore. They played two more, then they came to an end. They walked off stage, but not before high-fiving the people that were right in front of the stage and waving bye to the rest of the crowd.
I turned in my seat to face the bar and came face to face with the bartender and another drink.
Some of the house lights went back on after the show, so I was able to get a good look at the bartender that bumped into me. Before I could say anything, he throws a rag at me.
"For your leg, it's probably feeling sticky right about now," people began yelling their drink orders left and right, now that there's nobody to watch on stage, not allowing me to voice out my thanks so I nod.

Blog Tour: Review: Burn (Bayonet Scars #5) + Excerpt

Blog Tour: Review: Burn by J.C. Emery + Excerpt

Burn (Bayonet Scars, #5)

Tragedy cuts deep. Revenge burns deeper.
The blood of their enemies coats the leather of their cuts and a trail of bodies lie in their wake, but the Forsaken Motorcycle Club isn't done yet. Carlo Mancuso still needs to pay for his sins. Nobody knows that more than Ian Buckley, the Treasurer for Forsaken.
Ian prefers his pleasure mixed with pain and he's only ever at peace when he's doling out justice. Convinced that he's too unstable and sadistic to take an old lady, he keeps his trysts, like all of his relationships, brief and anonymous. But with his club at war, and the stakes being so personal, Ian's feeling the events around him more deeply than he expects.
Mindy Mercer is the sweet daughter of Fort Bragg’s most respectable cop. At least that’s how the town sees her. Very few people know the Mindy who hides her tracks and battles her cravings by lying to everyone around her. She thinks she has control of her addiction until she suffers an attack that leaves her searching for a way out of her own personal hell.
Mindy has never been more desperately in need of a savior and Ian has never seen a more beautifully destroyed creature in his life. Their attraction is intense, but their damage is extreme. Some scars never heal, and some people never get better.
Love is never more painful than when it can kill you.

Excerpt:

“You ride?”
I shake my head. He turns his face toward mine and waits as though I haven’t answered him. Maybe he thinks I haven’t. I guess I’ve been silent too long because he squeezes my hand and continues to stare at me with searching eyes. I shake my head again and this time he sees it and nods his head in return. He drops my hand and climbs on his bike. He nudges the kickstand up and holds the bike upright. He has a helmet in his outstretched hand.
“Wear this, then climb on like I did and place your feet here,” he says and points to a cylindrical black peg that juts out of the bike. “Don’t drop your feet and let your body lean into the turns.”
He’s patient with me as I stand here and psych myself up. I’ve had maybe a fantasy or two about a sexy man on a motorcycle, but until Ian it was just that—a passing fantasy that went as quickly as it came.
With his pointer finger, he summons me forward and sets the helmet on the tank between his legs. His eyes aren’t kind exactly and they’re not dark and sexy. They’re something else that I’m desperate to place, but can’t. I close the distance between us and stand before him. Slowly, he reaches out and brushes a lock of hair from my face and tucks it behind my ear.
“Tell me where you’re at,” he says quietly. He tucks my hair behind my other ear as well. I let out a soft, unintentional sigh. I barely hear the question—or order rather—and instead have all my attention focused on his touch. Being able, and even wanting, to be touched is such a wonder. “Tell me I help.”
There’s such a vulnerability about him in this moment as his fingers lightly weave through my messy hair and he’s asking for reassurance. My breath halts in my lungs. I both loathe and love the sound of his plea. I didn’t even know he was capable of this. Ian is always so strong for me that I think I sometimes forget that he’s human.
“I need you.”

My Rating: 4 of 5 stars

The crime was intense, the intimacy was even more so.

This story did not play out like how I expected it to. It's on a whole other level.

The tortured soul sob story is not what this is. This is more of a tortured soul comeback.

Hitting real issues fiercely and accepting that these things do happen, to anybody, and not letting the bad and evil things effect life negatively.

The story is of Ian and Mindy, two people with their own problems, issues, darkness or whatever you want to call it. Some of their baggage was brought on by an unfortunate situation, therefore, bringing them two together in the first place.

The situations the main characters were put in made them seem more in the background, especially at times when either main character was having to interact with a group of other people, regardless of whether it was with family or a friend. This made the interactions between Ian and Mindy seem as if they were literally in their own world, more intimate as well as more acknowledged when talking with another character in the story. It's not just useless dialogue or a fill-in scene that isn't significant to the plot which also shows the author's talent in not wasting a single word, so brownie points for that, JC.

I didn't quite get the revenge concept of the story. I mean, I understood the reasons why the characters felt the way they felt, but I didn't really see the point the author was trying to make. All I got was that Ian and Mindy needed to cope and accept all that went down, together, and the fact that their relationship was going to happen but needed to just take off from a good starting point. Unless the revenge was all about the fire scene, then I guess I did get it. Yes, because that would have been the 'good starting point' for Mindy and Ian and for finally seeing things the way each other saw it, and being accepting of everything. Bamn!

Overall, I ABSOLUTELY enjoyed reading the 5th installment of the Bayonet Scars series. There was so much intensity with Ian and Mindy. Their connection with one another was so beyond electric, they have shocked each other many times, but in the end, all that kinetic energy got them where they needed to be.

He caught my shoulders in his hands and lowered his forehead to mine. “I love you, Mac. I love you so damn much. Believe me. Please...” He tipped my chin up with a trembling hand.
“Please.”
My lids drifted shut. I knew I should move away. Kick him. Punch him. Scream at him. But I couldn’t move. I was mesmerized by his touch. His soft voice. Him. He lowered his mouth to mine, moving slow enough to give me a chance—a thousand chances—to move away or say no.
I didn’t do either. I couldn’t. A broken sound escaped me the second his lips touched mine.
Because I was. Broken. So badly.
When he stepped closer, closing me in his embrace and looming over me, a hundred images of us together flashed before me in some horrible montage. Us snorkeling.
Kissing in the rain. Me telling him I loved him. The way he’d looked on stage for the first time on tour with me. But the last image, of him kissing that blonde in his dressing room, ripped me out of the kiss. And out of his arms.
I stumbled back, covering my mouth. “Don’t. Just...don’t.”

Excerpt:

What would you do if you knew you could live forever? How would you change
your life? The world? Would you be the one to make it better? I thought the
cure for aging would be the answer to so many of humanity’s problems. I really
believed this little pill would help us make the world a better place.
Yet all I have seen is the further deterioration of generosity, love, compassion
and freedom. It has not brought out the better side of the human race. It has
created a darker side where compassion and generosity are rare traits that
are almost extinct. It has taken me over 400 years to realize that the end of
aging does not give one freedom. Your body becomes a prison in which you are
trapped and from which you can’t escape.
It saddens me that the world has entered such a dark time, to the point where
I no longer want to stay and witness the pain that we, as people, are putting
ourselves through.
To many, this will come as a shock. My success has only forced me to put up a
wall, one that keeps away even those who feel they are my closest friends. I do
not trust anyone. The friends I have left only appear to be interested in their
association with me to advance their own political aspirations in life.
I feel that if I can’t offer the peace that eternal life brings to all, then none of
us should have it. It is not fair of us to choose a select few to live far past an
age that God has intended.
I have watched too many good people come in and out of this world, knowing
that, “in the end,” I could have saved them. However, like many other people,
I had started believing that I deserved this gift, that it was my right, and that
if a person was not smart enough or rich enough to buy this gift, then they did
not deserve to obtain it.
Looking back on my life, I can see that I am the origin of all the world’s
troubles. As intelligent as I was to invent this amazing drug, I can’t begin to
imagine that I am brilliant enough to change the course of our planet.

My heart is broken, my soul damaged and weak. My resilience is nothing but
a shadow left. I cry, for humanity, mother earth and the faith that we have
lost in God. So the only thing left I can offer is the end. Tonight will be my
last. I have settled my regrets, sins and all other misgivings with God and
look forward to joining all of those I have cared for over my 400 years on this
planet.
He slowly raises the gun and puts it into his mouth. With a quick fluid motion,
the trigger is pulled.

★★★★★
Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Secrets. Anti-aging drugs. Some would do anything to get these in their hands, maybe even kill...?

This tale oozes charisma, witholds rieting content, and has some wicked fast-paced action-packed moments that are thrilling to the bone.

The story follows the main character, Mari, who comes from a home filled with good values and morals that takes place in the future of today's world where people's lives are basically revolving around this anti-aging drug called Xenvie. Only the rich can afford it,, leaving those who cannot to age and die poor. Mari is part of a group called The Foundation, and is  known as a Believer. Believer in God, faith, and oppose the anti-aging as wrong and against God's natural way of life. She is to be the new assistant for Joseph Aramat, the youngest son of the Aramati family, the family that owns the corporation she works at. From the very start, everything is already in motion. Things are only going to get even crazier and dangerous. Trusting someone is getting harder to do, and secrets that should be kept are about to be spilled.

This reminded me a little of Romeo and Juliet. there was even a scene where Joseph and Mari were about to pull a Wrath and Beth in J.R. Ward's Dark Lover. Overprotective male, deflecting female.

This was soo touching and incredibly heartfelt. I really don't think this book was soley about religion.  Yes, it was important, but it was more of something people could rely on, something pure and reliable, to have faith in. Something other than the Government and that anti-aging drug.

There was constant danger for Joseph and Mari. It was crazy how Mari would end up with the most physical damage in the many unpleasant encounters they were met with. Joseph was more on the mental side, assuming the reason was that He didn't quite believe in God, but Mari did. I was able to catch on fairly quick and appreciated the foreshadowing. It helped soften the the full impact of the things that were intense. Deadly even. So many secrets and strikes of betrayal. There were grammatical errors, enough to make it a bit difficult to figure out what was being said in conversation and what was the character thinking, especially in the longer paragraphs. Other than that, nothing seemed out of place. The author did fantastic in the very beginning elaborating the story's world and laying out all of the important stuff.

Overall, I had a very exciting reading experience and look forward to checking out momre of this author's work. Great debut.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This self-help is something really and truly insightful. It can really get down to what really counts and how to go about it. The beginning had a bunch of personal growth that can make almost any type of female reader want to keep reading, want to know the next best thing to having a fulfilling. It lures you in, like an ice cream truck driving by your house. There are a variety of flavors to choose from, a choice made my none other than you. Then getting closer to the end, I started to question what it was basically telling me to do. How to react, how to have a perspective. I believe the writer was on a role with the self-help instructions and suggestions in the beginning, but there is a contradiction later on that made me as a reader do a complete 180. I felt like I was in a trance and suddenly woke from it. This author definitely has a way with words, but I do recommend some more development on writing skills. But then again, what do I know. Check it out for yourself.

Overall, I did enjoy this short read and would recommend something like this to my grandmother or sister.

Her latest book is the YA speculative/feminist fiction, P.O.W.ER.

You've got the oppression, the sexist vibe, the feminist counteract, and the those in favor of equality.

This held so much controversial stuff, It was like having your favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But your pig-headed older brother eat your portion, therefore leaving you hungry. Well, that's exactly how I felt. Hungry, For what? For some change. For the bad to end in good. Not to have corrupt ministers use religion to justify the means. To just put every bad thing done under the rug, because nobody likes to air out their dirty laundry. That shit stank.

This was not just a piece of fiction, this held meaning, there was a cause. This had a bunch of everything, so this cannot be solely a book of feminism. The end game was equality, although it needed a feminist movement in order to get as far away as possible from the sexist, backward society the people lived in.

Young Andra BetScrivener just turned seventeen. And in this society, where men held all power and knowledge and the women were forbidden to read and write, she has finally entered womanhood. Thus, allowing her to began finding a husband. Go figure. There are many things that happen once she discovers her own unique power, so pay very close attention because things get very interesting.

Andra and her pacifist-like morals were so sweet and naive, but her sense of knowledge and reading and writing was very impressive, considering she learned but was never taught. At times I thought of here as a young pre-teen, or someone sheltered from the reality of life with the way she acts. Especially when she was around her father and Brian, it would show a flip side of her as well.

In the end, things were very nicely polished and didn't leave any thing out. I would've died if there was a cliff hanger.

Overall, this read was extremely riveting, and I highly recommend this to both men and women. This was seriously some good stuff.

Excerpt:

My stomach dropped as soon as Dad entered the kitchen scowling at a
thick card embossed with the government seal. My hand started to shake so
much that I had to put down my mug of tea. I knew this day was coming. After
all, it was my seventeenth birthday, the first day of the last year of my life.
“That’s the letter, isn’t it?”
Dad looked at me with one of his half smiles, the one that never
reached his eyes. I hadn’t seen him smile with genuine happiness for years, not
since Mother died. This smile made no effort to cover the sadness and defeat
in his face. “Pour me some cocoa, please.” He lowered himself into his
customary chair next to me, “I’ll do my civic duty and read this to you.”
“I could always read it myself,” I said. I waited for him to respond the
way he always did. I hoped that provoking him a little would reawaken the Dad
who let me believe I could do anything, while still protecting me from the
cruelty of our society. That Dad had disappeared over recent years.
“Andra!” he said, “You know I don’t like you to say that out loud. You
never know if someone might be listening. If I could let you read everywhere, I
would. We can’t let your secret get out.”
“I’m sorry.” I handed Dad his cocoa and watched as he took several sips.
For a moment he closed his eyes and his face relaxed. The secret to giving him
those brief moments was in the cocoa. I make it just like Mother used to. She
left us too soon to teach me all her cooking secrets, but she taught me a few.
She was a woman who turned everything she touched into something beautiful,
warm and comforting. She could make people calm even in the most terrifying
circumstances. Mother and Dad both made me believe that my future wasn’t
set in the same stone used to build the giant walls that separated New North
from the outside world. Mother believed that somehow they would find a way
to return to some of the freedoms of the past and make a better future for all
women. She never got the chance to do that. She died and Dad grew afraid.
“Ah, perfect as always. Now, to do my duty.” Dad put his mug down and
brought my attention back to the thick card, or the envelope of doom, as I
thought of it. The government seal—the Eye of the Lord—gleamed with a hint
of gold ink as it caught the light from the sun shining through the window. It
sent a shiver down my spine, as if the eye was really watching me.
